Poems of Ossian, The
London: Cadell and Davies, 1806. 2 volumes, 6" x 4" (each), volume 1: pp. xii, clxxi, 133, [3], volume 2: [7], 2-303, [7]. Marbled leather boards with gold stamping. Vol. 1 contains a 1-inch missing piece from the spine; boards loose but intact. Vol. 2 also has some repair marks; back cover board loose but attached at top hinge. Both volumes include owner's signature "Eliza Evans / 1820" on the front inside paste down. Vol. 2 contains Scottish illustrations (presumably by Ms. Evans) on the front and back matter. Illustrations depict "Aldo" and other figures from the book. Vol. 2 also contains a second set of owner's signatures - "R. Wager, June 3 1783" - which is an interesting puzzle as the book was published in 1806. Good.
A grouping of Epic poems, allegedly translated from ancient Gaelic writings, regaling the deeds of the Scottish hero Ossian and other mythical 3rd century figures derived from Scottish highland folklore.
