Shanghai, Singapore, Kunming (Yunnan, China): Christian Book Room, [ca. 1930]. 6 volumes, 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" (each), Genesis: pp. iv, 304; Exodus: pp. xi, [1], 344; Leviticus: pp. [4], 346; Numbers: pp. xii, 435, [1]; Deuteronomy (volume 1): pp. vii, [1], 416; Deuteronomy (volume 2): pp. [4], 460. Hunter green cloth over boards; gold stamping on the spine and front cover, with the exception of black stamping on both volumes of Deuteronomy. "C.H.M." stamped on each cover [Charles Henry Mackintosh]. Books are soiled; tidemarks are present on both cover boards and text, with a crack in the gutter at p. 415 of Deuteronomy (volume 1). Occasional water staining; text is slightly toned.

5 of the volumes include a glued-in typed circulation slip, which reads: "From Dr. Arthur C. Groth / 1290 Woodbury Road / Pasadena, California / Dear Friend: This book is loaned to you for a period of ONE MONTH. If you have a friend whom you think would enjoy the reading of it, lend it to him. Otherwise, kindly return to the above address. This is one of a set of books in the Pentateuch. If you are interested in reading one of the others kindly let me know. May the Lord bless your time spent over meditations of his Word. / This book may be mailed anywhere in the United States for 1 1/2 cents." All slips were glued in, resulting in visible staining. Exodus includes an inscription from Dr. Arthur C. Groth on the inside flyleaf with the same return address provided. 

The group was likely assembled piecemeal in Asian marketplaces and brought to California to serve as a stateside resource for Plymouth Brethren Christian members; only Exodus makes mention of edition, third revised. All volumes were likely printed after 1928 when the Chinese city of Yunnanfu officially changed to Kunming, though it is possible some volumes were printed earlier. All good to very good.
