Includes woodcut frontispiece and 9 illustrations; 3 reproductions of original Chinese pictures, and 6 plates drawn by the author. This is an unnumbered copy from the first edition, limited to 1,200 copies; it is unsigned. Illustrated paper boards show wear at the edges with small areas of scuffs, with about three dime-size areas where some illustration has worn through. Slight foxing to fore edge, light toning to endpapers. Text is clean. Very good. Item #2775

"Dee Goong An" marks the origin for the "Judge Dee" historical detective novels by Van Gulik. Privately printed through the Toppan Printing Company, the eventual series would highlight the drama of China's past.
