Boro: early Meiji era Japanese textile with sashiko

Japan: [publisher not identified], [ca. 1890]. 62" x 68" large indigo boro (Japanese fabric) from the early Meiji era. Hand-sewn, hand-woven, and hand-dyed. Sewn in 6 panels; includes multiple layers of overlapped patches and mending with sashiko stitching. Textile is frayed in parts and has unmended tears and breaks. The overall aesthetic is a classic example of sashiko on boro; repeated mendings and a variety of indigo patterns create a fabric patina that delicately shows use over time.  Item #2695
