Japan: [publisher not identified], [ca. 1910]. 51" x 56" indigo boro (Japanese fabric) from the late Meiji era. Hand-sewn, hand-woven, and hand-dyed, this is an indigo textile with one family crest attributed to Maru ni Katabami and a stunning overall floral/vine design applied by Tsutsugaki, a Japanese technique of resist dyeing that involves drawing rice-paste designs on cloth, dyeing the cloth, and then washing off the paste. Sewn in 4 panels. This textile may have been used as a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) or as an interior shade; indigo is bright and lively.  Item #2694
