Boro: Japanese textile, Maru ni Nairobi Takanoha [= crossed hawk feathers inside a circle]

Japan: [publisher not identified], [ca. 1910]. 45" x 44" indigo boro (Japanese fabric) from the late Meiji era. Hand-sewn, hand-woven, and hand-dyed, this is an indigo textile with one family crest attributed to Maru ni Nairobi Takanoha and one Japanese calligraphy mark applied by Tsutsugaki, a Japanese technique of resist dyeing that involves drawing rice-paste designs on cloth, dyeing the cloth, and then washing off the paste. Sewn in 2 panels. This textile may have been used as a furoshiki (wrapping cloth); shows slight fading and wear as this was used perhaps for many decades. Item #2693

Price: $280.00
