Boro: oblong Japanese textile, Maru Ni Sagari Fuji [= Wisteria Hanging within a Circle]
Japan: [publisher not identified], [ca. 1910]. 32" x 102" oblong indigo boro (Japanese fabric) from the late Meiji era. Hand-sewn, hand-woven, and hand-dyed, this is a brightly colored fabric with two large family crests attributed to Maru Ni Sagari Fuji, applied by Tsutsugaki, a Japanese technique of resist dyeing that involves drawing rice-paste designs on cloth, dyeing the cloth, and then washing off the paste. Sewn in 3 panels. This textile may have been used as an interior shade as there is limited color fading of the indigo. Item #2686
