Juan De Letran S., 1928. 3.25"x4.25" single black and white photograph of Amelia Wilhelmy (b. 29 May 1900 in Mazatlan, Mexico, d. 9 Aug. 1964 in Mexico City); she was known and beloved for her comedy and humor during the Golden Age of Mexico Cinema. Here, she is posed as 'Juan Mariguano' wearing a hat, black wig with choppy hair, vest, scarf tied around neck, eyebrows in a curious "m" shape - crosseyed and fixed on a smoke at the lips. Photograph is diagonally imprinted with "Foto Schlattman Mex. / SN. Juan De Letran S." The reverse side has multiple notes and identifiers; edges are slightly irregular. Item #235

"Actress, Singer, Comedian, and Vedette. Amelia Wilhelmy Flores, known as La Guayaba, was a prominent figure in Mexican vaudeville theater. Amelia made her debut at the age of 6 at the Escobedo Theater in Guaymas, Sonora. Her theater career solidified in 1928 when she was discovered by Roberto Soto, who invited her to join his company, debuting on February 3, 1928, in the revue "Así Se Gobierna" at the María Guerrero Theater, portraying the character 'Juan Mariguano,' which catapulted her to popularity. During her theatrical career, Wilhelmy worked with renowned artists such as Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" and Manuel Medel. She participated in the opening of the Follies Bergere Theater in October 1936. In cinema, she left a legacy with over twenty films during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Her roles in films like "Nosotros los Pobres" (1947) and "Ustedes los Ricos" (1948), where she played Malena "La Guayaba," are noteworthy.
