This is a later printing of the 1865 New Testament translation to the Dakota language. Contemporary publishers full morocco leather binding, small loss at foot of spine; gilt stamping, brown end papers. Text is clean, minor wear at extremities; front hinge starting. Translator and missionary Stephen R. Riggs (1812-83) set the foundation for early Dakota language texts; he was the editor for the Dakota-English Dictionary, still in use today for language learners. Riggs worked among the Dakota of the Minnesota River valley on behalf of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Item #2348
